Determine the wind direction and speed.
Select a reference point with an emergency landing area within gliding distance.
Plan the maneuver to enter at 600 to 1,000 feet AGL at an appropriate distance from the reference point, with the airplane headed downwind and the first turn to the left.
Apply wind drift correction to maintain a constant radius circle around the ground reference point with a angle of bank of approximately 45
at the steepest point.
Maintain coordinated flight while dividing your attention between airplane control and the ground track.
Maintain constant airspeed and altitude for two complete turns and exit at the entry point. Reverse directions if directed by the examiner.
Maintain entry altitude,
100 feet, and entry airspeed,
10 knots.

Arial
If you're far from your point, you'll have a shallow bank angle and a large turn radius. This means it will take a while to complete the maneuver.
Arial
More importantly, even a shallow bank angle may be enough to obstruct your view, if you're flying a high-wing airplane.
Arial
Also, if you fly the maneuver too low, you'll limit your gliding distance in an emergency and increase your chances of hitting obstructions.
Arial
The altitude requirements in the PTS provide obstacle clearance and more options in case of an emergency. And remember, the regulations prohibit you from flying within 500 feet of people or objects on the ground.

If you're high or close to the ground reference point, you'll have to use a steep bank angle to keep a constant distance.
Arial
This means you'll be turning quickly, and your turn radius will be small. In other words, the steeper the bank angle, the tighter the circle you'll fly around the point.
Arial
If the turn is too tight, your bank angle could exceed the PTS requirement for the maneuver.
Arial
PTS Maximum Allowable Bank Angle is 45
Arial
And, if you're in a high-wing airplane, a steep bank angle can obstruct your view of the reference point.

Arial
This is why you should do clearing turns before every maneuver. Clearing turns normally consist of at least a 180
change of direction, so you usually perform two 90
turns.
Arial
This gives you a good view of the area around your flight path, and helps you see and avoid any aircraft that may be in the vicinity.
Arial
One thing you need to consider anytime you're in the practice area is collision avoidance. When you're practicing a maneuver, it's easy to get distracted and forget that there might be other aircraft out there.
